民生植物區
人類為生活所需而栽植的植物,如稻米、小麥、玉米、小米等主食,豆類、蘿蔔等蔬菜以及香蕉、番茄等水果,通稱為民生植物。農業社會的人類馴化了許多野生植物,並且進行品種改良,成為今日大家食用的各種澱粉主食與蔬菜、水果。此外,還包括各種辛香調味料及飲料植物等。許多都市人通常不認識餐桌上植物的原貌,本區隨著節氣栽植不同穀類及蔬菜,提供民眾一窺民生植物的廬山真面目與季節性的變化。
殼斗科
殼斗科植物最重要的鑑別特徵是堅果具有杯斗狀殼斗。本科植物木材比重較高,可以用來製作農具及木劍等,木材所含養分也適合用於種香菇。本科植物是溫帶地區主要的森林組成,也是秋天景觀的黃葉樹種。我們常吃的糖炒栗子就是殼斗科的果實;歐洲多利用橡樹來製作釀酒桶,使用西班牙栓皮櫟的樹皮做為酒瓶的軟木塞;台灣農家常用殼斗科木材製作農具及家具。
A particular attribute one finds on plants of the Fagaceae is the cup-like nut shell. Most members of the Fagaceae are trees, which are mainly used in making agriculture tools and wooden swords. Because timber of the Fagaceae has a high nutrient content, it is used as a medium to grow mushrooms. Members of the Fagaceae family are major components of temperate forests, and their leaves turn colors in autumn. The Castanea tree produces chestnuts which are used for the snack, sugar chestnuts. In many European countries, the bark of Quercus suber is used for corks; and in Taiwan, many members of the Fagaceae are used for making agriculture tools and furniture.
